There is growing concern that upstream materials and wafer supplies could be limited in the aftermath of the earthquake in Japan. Nanya Technology, however, does not anticipate any material impact from the events on its ability to supply products to customers, according to the company.
Nanya revealed that it mainly sources silicon wafers from Formosa Sumco Technology (FST), a venture between Sumco Techxiv and Formosa Plastics Group.
Based in Taiwan, FST has monthly capacity of 180,000 12-inch wafers and 300,000 8-inch wafers.
Nanya made the remarks in response to market speculation that disrupted production at major wafer producers in Japan due to the earthquake may have a negative impact on the DRAM supply chain. Sumco, a supplier for Nanya and Inotera Memories, reportedly has to shut down one of its plants with no time-frame for when they will re-open.
According to Sumco's latest update, operations at its Yonezawa plant, Yamagata Prefecture, have been suspended following the earthquake. However, operations at its plants in the Kyushu region remain normal.
Nanya's shares closed down 6.6% at NT$14.05 (US$0.47) on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) on March 17.
