MediaTek currently has no plans to develop and produce touch controller ICs, but instead will cooperate with touch controller vendors in Taiwan and China to tap the white-box handset market, according to industry sources.
The market reports come after MediaTek announced a week earlier that its overseas subsidiary, Gaintech, has invested US$2 million in China-based capacitive touch-controlled solution vendor Goodix on behalf of the parent company.
Prior to the announcement, the industry had long expected MediaTek to eventually venture into the development and production of touch controller ICs due to strong market demand, said the sources.
Touch controller ICs from some Taiwan-based IC design houses, including ITE Tech, Sitronix Technology and Egalax_empia Technology (EETI), have been verified by MediaTek, the sources noted.
