Global smartphone shipments reached 343.3 million units in the second quarter of 2016, up 3.1% on quarter and 0.3% on year, according to the latest data from IDC.

Samsung's second-quarter smartphone shipments reached 77 million units, accounting for a 22.4% share globally and increasing 5.5% from a year earlier.

Apple shipped 40.4 million iPhone devices in the second quarter, representing a 15% on year decline as consumers held off on purchases in anticipation of the next big launch in the third quarter, IDC said.

The new 4-inch iPhone SE proved successful in both emerging and developed markets as the new SE has captured many first-time smartphone buyers as well as Android users switching over to the Apple ecosystem.

However, the ASP of iPhones dropped to US$595 in the second quarter, down 10.1% from a year earlier as smartphone competition continues to escalate, IDC noted.

Huawei captured the third position once again with a 9.4% share thanks to strong domestic sales and even stronger European sales. The increase in these two regions contributed to shipments totaling 32.1 million units in the second quarter, up 8.4% on year.

OPPO continued with its aggressive marketing and advertising in the second quarter of 2016, especially for its flagship R9 device, which helped push shipments to 22.6 million units in the quarter, up 136.6% on year, and accounting for a 6.6% share compared to 2.8% of a year earlier.

Vivo is still on an upward trajectory in China, with momentum spread across multiple product models. The vendor shipped 16.4 million smartphones in the second quarter, up 80.2% from a year ago, while its global market share improved to 4.8% from 2.7% during the same period.
