A few years ago, MediaTek was only focusing on budget devices and they were one of the main choices, along with Qualcomm. The company has made great progress and improved its chipsets a lot recently, and is now ready to battle in the high-end segment with new Helio SoC.

The Helio X30 won't be available until next year, but it is now officially unveiled by MediaTek so we could know what to expect. It packs a deca-core processor in the usual tri-cluster design. Unlike the Helio X25, which uses a combination of Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 core, the X30 leverage ARM's latest Cortex-A35 cores for even better efficiency and if we add 10nm to the list, the chipset should have very low power consumption.

Four Cortex-A73 cores are clocked at 2.8 GHz, 4 Cortex-A53 at 2.2 GHz, and 2 Cortex-A35 at 2.0 GHz. The CPU is paired with a quad-core PowerVR 7XT.

The SoC supports camera sensors of up to 40 MP with video capture capped at 24 fps video, a 16 MP sensor at up to 60 fps video and 8 MP sensor at up to 120 fps. It also supports up to 8 GB of RAM with two LPDDR4 POP 1600MHz channels and the modem supports three carrier aggregation and LTE Cat. 12.
