Effectively all of the profit in the smartphone industry comes from Samsung and Apple, with the money heavily connected to their premium devices. Canaccord Genuity reports 75% of the industry's profits came from Apple during the second quarter and Samsung's phones made up 30%. Other companies generally reported losses.

Apple has the greatest margin on its devices at 38%, while Samsung has a 17% margin. These results aren't too different from other quarters and Canaccord says Apple and Samsung have dominated smartphone profits for four years.

This report doesn't fully represent the global smartphone market since it fails to include companies like Xiaomi and Huawei. Nevertheless, it still shows Samsung and Apple are responsible for much of the profit.

Apple's share of the profit has fallen in the recent past and is currently at its lowest point since Q2 2014.
