The latest figures from IDC reveal Chromebooks outsold Macs for the first time in the United States during the first quarter of 2016. According to IDC, Chrome OS laptop sales reached about 2 million during the quarter, whereas there were 1.76 million Mac sales.

While those devices are clearly targeting different sectors, it still shows how far Chromebooks have come since their introduction in 2011. Chromebooks saw very minimal sales for quite a while, but they're now fairly widespread.

Sales in the education market have been particularly helpful for Chromebooks since that market often doesn't need high specs or full software capabilities and prefers low prices.

Chromebooks are still well behind Windows PC sales, which were at 10 million during the quarter.
