MediaTek is expected to cut the price of its single chip MT6252 handset solution in April when China-based Spreadtrum is scheduled to launch its new 6610 chip, according to industry sources.
MediaTek's MT6252 chip, which supports for up to four SIM cards, has a low BOM costs, and has been adopted by a number of handset makers, said the sources.
Spreadtrum's previous launch of its SC6600 solution in the third quarter of 2010 has since then resulted in a substantial decline in handset solution prices in Taiwan and China, and so MediaTek is likely to adopt an aggressive pricing strategy to take on the new single-chip 6610 from Spreadtrum, the sources commented.
