Elpida Memory on April 7 announced that it has developed a 4-gigabit (4Gb) DDR2 mobile RAM, which employs the company's 30nm process technology. The new device features a low operating voltage of 1.2V, achieves a data transfer rate of up to 1066Mbps, and uses roughly 30% less operating current compared with stacking two of Elpida's 40nm 2Gb products.
Elpida said the new 4Gb DDR2 mobile RAM is also an eco-friendly DRAM equipped with a low power feature that targets mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs by contributing to extended operating times of battery-powered devices.
Elpida plans to ship the new DDR2 mobile RAM as PoP, FBGA packages, and as a bare chip for MCPs. Sample shipments of the chip will begin in April, with mass production slated for June. Production is also planned at subsidiary Rexchip Electronics in order to guarantee a stable product supply, Elpida indicated.
