The Supreme Court will begin hearing Apple's case against Samsung on October 11, with a ruling expected to come down in December or January. Apple filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung in 2011 and both companies have been dealing with the case since that point. Once a judgement comes down from the Supreme Court, the case could be over.
Between 2011 and 2015, both sides have received court victories. Apple was initially supposed to receive $1 billion in damages, but that has since morphed into $548 million, as of December 2015.
The damages figure is based on the total sale profits made by Samsung, which it isn't happy about. With this case, the Supreme Court will give its view on the situation.
While Apple believes the judgement should include the entire profit from each sale, Samsung says the judgement should be based on individual features.
If Apple wins, the case is effectively over, with Samsung expected to pay the full $548 million. If Samsung wins, the case will head back to a lower court and a smaller payout will be picked. |
