Samsung's share of the smartphone market has fallen to its lowest point in close to two years. A report from IDC reveals its global share fell to 20% during the third quarter, which is the closest it has come to Q4 2014's 19.9% in recent years. The Note 7 recall, though important, was a minor factor in the market share decline since it only impacted a few weeks of the quarter.

IDC estimates Samsung shipped 72.5 million phones, down from 83.8 million a year prior.

Once the impact of the Note 7 situation is more completely seen in the fourth quarter, Samsung may encounter even worse market share and financial reports.
