Acer and Asustek Computer will adjust their strategies for marketing notebooks in 2017, with Acer to decrease shipments of entry-level models and focus on gaming, 2-in-1 and slim models, while Asustek plans to reduce its number of OEM suppliers, according to supply chain makers.

The global notebook market has staged a rebound recently, buoyed largely by strong replacement demand for business models due to increasing availability of Window 10 on these models, said the sources, adding that the trend is expected to continue in 2017.

Acer and Asustek, which have been focusing more on consumer models, will benefit less from the ongoing trend and are expected to see their notebook shipments decline at a pace higher than other brands such as HP, Dell and Lenovo in 2017, commented the sources.

Additionally, the launch of new MacBooks as well as new notebooks from Microsoft, Xiaomi Technology and Huawei have combined to force to Acer and Asustek to fine tune their marketing strategies, added the sources.

While slimming down its mainstream entry-level notebook lines, Acer will also integrate its E Junior- and EA-series products and will continue to promote its ultra-thin Windows 10-based Swift lineups.

Asustek currently has three OEM suppliers, Quanta Computer, Pegatron and Wistron, and plans to reduce the number to two, indicated the sources. Additionally, Asustek is outsourcing production of its all-in-one PCs to Compal Electronics.
