The vast majority of Note 7 units sold in the United States are no longer in the hands of consumers. Months after beginning the handset's recall, Samsung says 85% of US units "have been replaced through the US Note 7 Refund and Exchange Program." Most consumers have opted to receive another Samsung phone.
At least some consumers are believed to have moved to non-Samsung devices due to the Note 7's recall. Research from IDC indicated up to 50% of Note 7 owners would be switching to an iPhone.
To encourage consumers to hand over the remaining units, Samsung will be rolling out an update that limits Note 7 batteries to a 60% charge. That limitation reduces the chance of a unit overheating and catching fire.
