Taiwan-based IC design houses, including MediaTek, FocalTech Systems and Global Mixed-mode Technology (GMT), are to see their shipments gain a boost in 2017 due to increasing orders from China-based smartphone vendors, particularly Oppo and Vivo, according to industry sources.
MediaTek, which has been cooperating with Oppo and Vivo for some time, is expected to see its revenues grow over 25% on year in 2016 thanks to growing chipset solution orders from Oppo, Vivo and other China-based smartphone vendors, the sources noted.
Both Oppo and Vivo have been enjoying brisk sales for smartphones in the China market recently, and saw their shipments double on year to 20.1 million and 19.2 million units, respectively, in the third quarter of 2016, according to IDC.
Individually, Oppo's total shipments are expected to reach over 100 million units in 2016 and further increase to 120-130 million units in 2017, the sources estimated.
FocalTech has recently landed orders for full in-cell touch display driver (TDDI) ICs from Oppo and Vivo, the sources indicated.
With orders from other major China-based smartphone vendors, FocalTech is expected to see its shipments of TDDI ICs expand by 3-4 fold in 2017, the sources estimated.
Meanwhile, GMT is currently in talks with Vivo for the production of customized VCM (voice coil motor) driver Ics, revealed the sources, adding that if talks between the two sides go smoothly, GMT may begin shipping VCM ICs to Vivo in 2017. |
