MediaTek is planning to initiate a shake-up of its corporate structure as the company strives to achieve better individual specialization and further increase its operational efficiency, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move is also to support its integration with Ralink Technology.
MediaTek will reorganize the company into eight major divisions to target different market segments – TV, PC, optical storage, feature phone, smartphone, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and WiMAX/LTE, and Ralink's product lines – instead of the current two business groups, the source noted.
MediaTek will assign directors to manage each department, and independently submit regular reports to president Hsieh Chin-chiang, the sources indicated. Chairman MK Tsai will retain his role in decision making, the sources added.
MediaTek recently announced its merger with Ralink via a share swap, with MediaTek being the surviving company. MediaTek said merging with Ralink will allow it to provide a complete portfolio of Wi-Fi solutions and other networking technologies such as Bluetooth, GPS, xDSL and Ethernet. Ralink specializes in Wi-Fi chips and related connectivity technology.
MediaTek reportedly is looking to strengthen its presence in the growing markets for smartphones and tablet PCs.
The MediaTek-Ralink merger is expected to close on October 1, 2011, according to the companies.
