China-based smartphone vendor Oppo has launched its R9s smartphone in the Taiwan market, targeting the mid-range segment with a price tag of NT$14,990 (US$473) unlocked.

The Oppo R9s comes with a 5.5-inch 1080 by 1920 pixels AMOLED display, Qualcomm octa-core Snapdragon 625 CPU, dual 16-megapixel cameras, and a 3010mAh battery, with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM.

With the release of the Oppo R9s and expanded retail channels, Oppo aims to become the third largest smartphone vendor in the Taiwan market in 2017, according to Heaven Ho, president of Oppo Taiwan.

Buoyed by the brisk sales of its F1s, Oppo ranked the sixth largest smartphone vendor in Taiwan with a 4.5% share in terms of sales volume, according to data compiled by local retail channels.

Oppo expects its sales in the local market to increase by 3- to 4-fold in December and the number of its smartphone users to increase to 1.5 million in 2017, from one million currently, Ho said.
