Verizon has changed its position on Samsung's update for the Note 7 that'll render all remaining units in the United States useless. It originally said it wouldn't roll out the update, which prevents the phone from charging, but now it plans to let the software update go out in January.

Rather than release the software on December 19 like Samsung wanted, Verizon will release it on January 5. Verizon was initially opposed due to the "risk" it would pose for those who don't have a device to switch to.

The carrier is holding off on the update due to the holidays.
