The Taiwanese semiconductor firm was looking to become one of the companies that could challenge Qualcomm, but the latter has switched into a higher gear and pull away. This has resulted in a poor chipset shipments from MediaTek in the first quarter of 2017.
The company's shipments fell below 100 million and obviously the main reason behind that is the shift of many Chinese customers to rival chipset manufacturer Qualcomm, as well as problems with 10nm manufacturing process and delay of its Helio X30 flagship chipset.
The shipments in the second quarter are expected to be around 110 and 120 million. For comparison, the company had a record number of shipments last year with 480 million chipsets, which will be hard to match this year. |
