Spot prices for 1300MHz 1Gb DDR3 chips reached US$3.01 on January 8 compared to US$2.45 on December 17, 2008, showing a 23% rise,  The memory price tracker said demand for DDR3 chips has increased to tighten supply, despite seasonality.
DDR3 contract prices for January will be stimulated by the recent hike in spot prices, adding that the price momentum will be sustainable.
With DDR3 set to succeed DDR2 in the first quarter of 2010, the growing adoption by major PC vendors has caused a tighter supply.
quoted in previous reports as estimating DDR3 chips would account for 60% of total DRAM in the first quarter of 2010.
