Memory IC packaging and testing firms Powertech Technology (PTI) and Walton Advanced Engineering have revised downward their targeted sales contributions from mobile DRAM products for 2011, citing slower-than-expected growth in end-market demand.
PTI originally expected sales generated from mobile DRAM orders to account for 25% of company revenues by the end of 2011, but the goal may be carried out at a later time, according to company sources.
PTI remarked earlier in the year that sales for 2011 would enjoy 10-15% growth thanks to strong mobile DRAM demand from the smartphone and tablet PC sectors. But the company recently pointed out that actual sales of non-Apple devices seem to be less optimistic than the outlook given.
Fellow company Walton indicated that demand for mobile DRAM has grown at a slower pace since the end of the first quarter. Uncertainties in the global economy are also weighing on end market demand, the company said.
Walton now projects mobile DRAM and niche-market memory products will account for about 40% of company revenues in 2011. It previously estimated that more than 50% of revenues for the year would come from the non-PC DRAM segment.
