Taiwan-based Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS), a joint venture of Royal Philips Electronics and Taiwan-based optical disc drive maker Lite-On IT, has cooperated with Japan-based Plextor to offer 64GB and 128GB SSDs for notebooks. PLDS is responsible for product development and production while Plextor manages brand marketing, according to PLDS.
PLDS and Plextor are aiming at a global SSD market share of 10% in 2010, PLDS indicated. The per unit storage cost for SSDs compared to hard disks is expected to drop from 10:1 in 2008 to 6:1 in 2010, 5:1 in 2011 and 4:1 in 2012, with the decreasing price gap conducive to increasing penetration of SSDs, PLDS noted.
