In a significant advancement for the storage and computing industry, NVM Express, Inc. has released an update to its NVMe technology with the introduction of the NVMe 2.1 specifications. This update not only builds upon the strengths of previous specifications but also incorporates a range of new features that cater to the evolving needs of modern computing.
Peter Onufryk, NVM Express Technical Workgroup Chair, highlighted the growth of NVMe technology, stating, "NVMe technology has grown into nearly a dozen specifications, providing pivotal support across all major transports and standardizing many aspects of storage." The technology has successfully unified client, cloud, AI, and enterprise storage around a common architecture, and with 75 new authorized technical proposals underway, the future of NVMe looks promising.
The new NVMe specifications aim to streamline development and reduce time to market. The three new specifications include the NVMe Boot specification, the Subsystem Local Memory command set, and the Computational Programs command set. Additionally, eight updated specifications have been released, covering areas such as the NVMe 2.1 Base specification, Command Set specifications, Transport specifications, and the NVMe Management Interface specification.
Key capabilities introduced in the NVMe 2.1 specifications include:
- Live migration of PCIe NVMe controllers between NVM subsystems.
- Host-directed data placement for SSDs, simplifying ecosystem integration while maintaining backward compatibility.
- Offloading certain host processing tasks to NVMe storage devices.
- A network boot mechanism for NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).
- Support for NVMe over Fabrics zoning.
- Enhanced security features, such as TLS 1.3 support, centralized authentication verification, and post-sanitization media verification.
- Management enhancements, including out-of-band management support, management over I3C, and dynamic creation of exported NVM subsystems.
These updates are aimed at improving the efficiency, security, and flexibility of NVMe technology, ensuring it remains at the forefront of storage solutions for diverse computing applications. The complete set of NVM Express specifications and new feature specifications are available for download on the NVM Express website, providing developers and industry professionals with the tools needed to harness the full potential of NVMe technology in their work.
