Silicon Motion will soon introduce a lineup of its USB 3.0 controller chips, and is eyeing to be among the top-3 players in the market segment in 2012, according to company president and CEO Wallace Kou.
Silicon Motion has internally developed its PHY (physical layer interface) technology for the USB 3.0 standard, marking a milestone for the company, which used to adopt other firms' USB PHY IPs, Kou noted.
Silicon Motion is also aiming to be among the top-3 suppliers in the embedded MMC (eMMC) controller market in 2013, through enhancing its ties with NAND flash chip vendors, Kou indicated.
Silicon Motion started shipping its products for eMMC devices in the fourth quarter of 2011. Shipments will expand significantly in 2012 and rise through 2013, Kou said.
Silicon Motion said previously sales of its eMMC controllers would start bringing in a solid contribution to company revenues in 2012.
In addition, Kou commented that major NAND chip suppliers will continue to grab a majority share of the eMMC NAND device market over the short term. Before the market matures, dedicated module firms will have little room to grow, Kou said.
