The Taiwan government has reiterated its push for some form of cooperation among US, Japan- and Taiwan-based DRAM chipmakers, according to Tu Chi-chun, director general of the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). None of the parties expect Samsung Electronics to become the biggest winner from the bankruptcy of Elpida Memory, said Tu.
The government still supports the idea of uniting the non-Korean DRAM companies aiming to stop Samsung expanding its market leadership, Tu stated.
Tu made the statement the day after Elpida filed for bankruptcy protection.
Taiwan's government has thus far made no actual efforts to support an industry consolidation since it failed to carry out a project to unite Taiwan's DRAM makers with Elpida in late 2009.
In other news, Elpida reportedly is looking to submit a rehabilitation plan by mid-April. Reuters quoted Nikkei in a recent report that Elpida intends to draw up a rehabilitation plan within six weeks, and is expected to decide on a sponsor firm. |
