Flash memory maker SanDisk is looking to its embedded solutions for future growth, and strives to enhance the product portfolio to fully address the mobile market opportunities.
SanDisk in its most-recent earnings call revealed that the firm has been late in adapting its product roadmap to meet the requirements of its key OEM customers, which might limit its embedded business' growth. SanDisk added that the company is now in the process of developing and qualifying new embedded solutions including the next generation of its iNAND series, multichip package (MCP) and other proprietary products, with mass production slated for the second half of 2012.
Through its partnerships with the world's leading mobile OEMs, SanDisk is looking to gain its embedded market share later in 2012, according to the flash memory firm.
SanDisk also commented that compared to the past, the markets that NAND flash memory is targeting today are diverse and large. The booming markets for smartphones and tablet PCs, for instance, will buoy sales of the company's embedded solutions over the next three years, SanDisk said.
SanDisk disclosed that it is looking at one billion smartphones in another 3-years-or-so timeframe, and 600-plus million units of tablets in a similar timeframe on a per year basis. Meanwhile, SanDisk is positive about its SSD business with sales expected to account for more than 10% of company revenues in FY2012.
The SSD business includes SanDisk's embedded SSD offering dubbed iSSD, which has secured several new design wins in ultrabooks, the firm said.
SanDisk forecast that respect sales of its embedded memory and SSD product lines will exceed those of card products by 2014. In 2008, flash cards and drives were SanDisk's main revenue contributor accounting for more than 80% of company revenues.
SanDisk reported disappointing results for the first quarter of FY2012. Revenues saw declines of 24% sequentially and 7% from a year ago while net profits fell 59% on quarter and 49% on year.
