SanDisk's mSATA SSD devices have been adopted by Fujitsu for its recently-announced ultrabooks, and Lenovo for the ThinkPad Edge-series notebooks, according to the flash memory vendor.
SanDisk announced that Fujitsu has selected its 32GB iSSD integrated storage device for use in the new Fujitsu LifeBook lineup of ultrabooks. SanDisk's iSSD technology is combined with Condusiv Technologies ExpressCache software to deliver improved system performance, the firm said. The combination also helps reduce system startup and application loading times.
In a separate statement, SanDisk said that Lenovo has selected its U100 mSATA SSD for the new Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430 and E530 notebooks. The 16GB U100 SSD and SanDisk's Condusiv caching software work alongside the HDD in the ThinkPad Edge E430 and E530 to store data allowing a significant boost to performance because information is processed more quickly, SanDisk said.
In addition, SanDisk's efforts to promote its embedded multimedia card (eMMC) flash memory have been effective. The firm has grabbed an about 25% share of the global eMMC market trailing only Samsung Electronics.
Dan Inbar, senior VP and GM of SanDisk's OEM business unit, forecast that about 80% of total smartphones available will adopt eMMC solutions in 2013. This year, a 4GB eMMC device will be generally used for entry-level smartphones, and mainstream models will feature ones with capacities ranging from 16GB to 32GB, Inbar said.
Inbar also expressed his optimism about the NAND flash market in the second half of 2012. Demand will improve gradually as the memory is being used in increasingly diverse applications.
