Taiwan-based DRAM chipmaker ProMOS Technologies reportedly plans to lay off more than 1,000 employees, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report. Downsizing will be implemented in phases starting October 19, the report said.
Earlier in 2012, ProMOS already cut almost 500 jobs, the report indicated, without citing its source.
ProMOS currently has a 12-inch wafer plant at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP). There were rumors that the company had been in talks with pure-play foundries including Globalfoundries and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturig Company (TSMC) for selling the facility.
ProMOS incurred net losses of NT$19.55 billion (US$666.75 million) in 2011. The firm slipped into the red in 2007, and has remained unprofitable since.
