Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) will perform relatively strongly in the fourth quarter of 2012 thanks to 28nm orders from Qualcomm and MediaTek, according to industry sources.
While Marvell Technology and Xilinx are holding a conservative view over prospects for the fourth quarter, Qualcomm and MediaTek reportedly have increased their orders for 28nm chips by 20% at TSMC as compared to the previous quarter, which will translate into more testing and packaging businesses for ASE and SPIL, indicated the sources.
ASE, which has been focusing more on telecommunications chips, is expected to see its revenues for the fourth quarter stay flat or grow slightly from the third quarter, the sources estimated.
SPIL reportedly has also landed testing and packaging orders for 28nm chips from Qualcomm with shipments to begin in November, revealed the sources, but adding that SPIL's initial shipments to Qualcomm will be limited and therefore, its fourth-quarter revenues may show a single-digit rate decline or stay flat at best.
