Powerchip Technology may tear down its P3 12-inch fab and sell the production equipment and land separately if it cannot liquidate the plant in one lot. Potential buyers including GlobalFoundries and some China-based enterprises are evaluating the possibility of taking over the fab, according to industry sources.
P3 has a production capacity of 45,000 wafers a month, dedicated to the production of commodity DRAM chips on a 40nm process.
However, Powerchip is now focusing on the production of non-memory ICs, specialty DRAM and other niche-market memory chips utilizing its P1 and P2 plants, which have a combined capacity of 60,000 wafers a month.
Powerchip will be delisted from Taiwan's over-the-counter (OTC) stock market on December 11.
