Optical disc drive maker (ODD) Lite-On IT has been aggressively expanding its solid state drive (SSD) business and expects its annual capacity for 2013 to reach 3.5-4 million units, up from 1.5 million units in 2012.
Lite-On is also set to purchase new production equipment as well as expand its production lines in the second quarter of 2013.
Lite-On pointed out that the company used to only provide ODM services to a Japan-based brand, but has started a brand its own SSD products. With the company's ODD manufacturing background and advantages in firmware technology, Lite-On has successfully landed orders from several first-tier PC brands.
In addition to notebook and hybrid hard disc drives (HDD), Lite-On also plans to advance into industrial and car electronics-use SSDs in the future and the company currently has a 5-7% share of the global SSD market in terms of shipments.
