Several notebook component makers have recently started trying to land orders from Samsung Electronics, and are making the entrance to Samsung's supply chain their priority for 2013, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Since Samsung has a low outsourcing proportion, while has the potential to achieve strong shipment growth in 2013, the sources expect the Korea-based vendor to have a good chance of expanding its orders to outside makers, making its orders rather attractive to the upstream component makers.
Since Apple continues to be affected by weak yield rates and has been delaying the launch of new products such as MacBooks and iMacs several upstream component makers are already making contact with Samsung, hoping to enter its supply chain; however, so far no new outsourcing has be offered, the sources noted.
The sources pointed out that most key components will continue to be made by Samsung Electronics in-house.
As for ODMs, in addition to Samsung's existing partner Compal Electronics, Quanta Computer and Wistron have also been contacting the vendor for orders.
Samsung shipped about 13 million notebooks in 2012 and is estimated to ship 17 million units in 2013, while its smartphone shipments are expected to reach 350 million units in 2013 and tablet shipments 40 million units, up from 15 million units in 2012.
