Asustek Computer has announced revenues of NT$40.11 billion (US$1.35 billion) for January, up 35.78% on year, mainly due to strong tablet and notebook shipment growth. However, the company is expected to suffer a 10-20% sequential drop in the first quarter of 2013 because of weak demand for Windows 8.
Asustek achieved an almost 20% on-year growth in 2012 revenues at over NT$412 billion, hitting a new high since the spin-off of Pegatron Technology.
The company pointed out that consumers will still be evaluating Windows 8-based PC products in the first half of 2013, but when the peak season comes in the second half, demand for Windows 8 will increase and drive up sales.
In the fourth quarter of 2012, Asustek's notebook shipments worldwide already surpassed Acer's and became the third-largest vendor behind only Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Lenovo, according to market watchers citing IDC's latest figures.
As for the tablet market, the company was also the third-largest vendor in the non-Apple camp, following Samsung Electronics and Amazon, in the fourth quarter of 2012, and with its upcoming second-generation Nexus 7 and entry-level 7-inch models, the company may advance to second place in 2013.
Currently, the North America region contributes 25% of Asustek's total revenues, Asia Pacific (including China) 42%, and Europe 33%. As the company continues to achieve excellent results in expanding market shares worldwide, Asustek is confident about achieving revenue growth in 2013.
In 2013, Asustek aims to ship 24 million notebooks, up from 22.3 million units in 2012 (19 million notebooks and 3.3 million netbooks) and 12 million tablets, up from 6.3 million units in 2012.
