Samsung Electronics has unveiled an array of new models of its Galaxy smartphone family with display sizes ranging from 3- to 6.3-inch, targeting particularly the entry-level to midrange smartphone segment in China, according to industry sources.
The launch of new Galaxy phones aims to take on China-based smartphone vendors while further enhancing Samsung's leading market position in China, since most of Samsung's new phones are dual SIM dual standby models - the most favorable smartphone standard in China, the sources added.
Samsung's new offerings include Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 as large-size smartphone models are also becoming popular in China. But the displays and processors adopted by the two models are not as high as those used in Galaxy Note, the sources pointed out.
Three new models, the Galaxy Win i8552, Trend II i739 and Trend Dous II S7572, will be launched first in China, with two other models, the Galaxy Pocket Neo and Galaxy Star to come later.
The Trend II i739 is customized model for China Telecom, while the Galaxy Star will be the lowest priced model equipped with a 850MHz single core processor and a 2-megapixel camera, said the sources.
Shipments of Samsung's smartphones in China soared 153% on year to 37.1 million units in 2012, accounting for the largest 17% share of China's smartphone market compared to 15.8% of a year earlier.
However, Lenovo saw its smartphone shipments in China increase fivefold to take up the number two title with a 11% share, the sources revealed.
