Compal Electronics has obtained orders for an inexpensive 10-inch tablet model from Acer, with shipments to begin in August 2013, according to sources with the Taiwan-based supply chain.
Compal is also making the sub-US$150 7-inch Iconia B1 tablet Acer launched in fourth-quarter 2012, with first-quarter 2013 shipments hiking 2.6-3 times sequentially, the sources indicated.
Compal beat Wistron to win orders for Acer's 10-inch tablet, the sources noted. However, Wistron has landed orders for Acer's 7.9-inch Iconia A1-810, and will start shipments in June 2013, the sources added.
Compal has also obtained for a new version of Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire, the sources indicated.
Compal aims to ship 8-10 million tablets in 2013 and tablet shipments accounted for nearly 10% of its consolidated revenues in first-quarter 2013, much higher than the 4% for 2012, the sources noted.
