IC testing house King Yuan Electronics (KYEC) has grabbed orders for tri-axis accelerometers used in low-to-mid cost smartphones from a major MEMS IDM, with shipments kicking off in the second quarter, according to industry sources. Cooperation with the client could extend to 6- and 9-axis accelerometers in the future, the sources said.
In response, KYEC said that it does not comment on rumors or speculation.
Nonetheless, KYEC indicated that the company is already engaged in the MEMS testing field. KYEC added that it began small-volume shipments for MEMS motion sensors in 2012, and the business accounted for less than 3% of company revenues.
KYEC expects to grow shipments for MEMS sensors in 2013, said the company, adding that it is also vying for an opportunity to tap the MEMS microphone market.
