China-based smartphone vendor Xiaomi Technology has launched its new flagship model, the Xiaomi 2S, in the Taiwan market, with a 16GB version available immediately at a suggested retail price of NT$9,499 (US$319.2), while a 32GB version will available in May priced NT$11,199.
The 4.3-inch Xiaomi 2S is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, comparable to the CPU used in HTC's New HTC One, which is equipped with a 4.7-inch display. Prices of the New HTC One range from NT$22,100-21,000 depending on storage capacity.
Since Taiwan is a highly competitive market for smartphones, the launch of Xiaomi 2S in the local market aims at learning how to compete with multinational brands on an equal footing, Xiaomi chairman Lei Jun said at a press conference.
While the popularity of a number of China-based brands including Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE and Coolpad has risen rapidly in China , these brands have faced difficulties ramping up their brands and market share in Taiwan due to a lack of brand recognition and after-sales service, according to market observers in Taiwan.
To improve its brand image, Huawei reportedly plans to double its marketing budget to promote its smartphones in Taiwan, according to industry observers. Huawei has recently launched two flagship models in the local market.
If the marketing efforts, including low-pricing tactics, implemented by Huawei and Xiaomi are successful, other China-based brands are expected to follow suit soon, said the observers.
