Intel, MediaTek and Elan Microelectronics combined have taken up over 60% of global touchscreen controller ICs market, according to industry sources.
The global touchscreen controller chip market has been expanding at a CAGR of over 20% in recent years, attracting at least 50 chipset suppliers, including more than 20 in Taiwan, to step into the segment, the sources noted.
MediaTek and its associated companies MStar Semiconductor and Goodix Technology together have a production capacity of 10 million touchscreen controller ICs a month currently, the sources revealed.
Intel has been increasing its presence in the touch controller IC segment through its investments in IC design houses, including FocalTech Systems and Egalaxy-empia Technology (EETI).
FocalTech, currently the largest provider of smartphone-use touchscreen controllers in China, has also stepped up its sales to the tablet segment, while EETI has been making inroads into the touch controller IC market for notebooks and ultrobooks, the sources indicated.
Elan has recently landed more windfall orders for touchscreen controller ICs from non-Apple smartphone and tablet makers as well as from notebook and ultrabook vendors after the Taiwan-based IC design house won recently a lawsuit case against Apple with regard to a patent for the manufacture of touch controller ICs, said the sources.
In addition to supplying touchscreen controller ICs for Google's new Nexus 7, Elan has also received smartphone-use touch controller orders from China-based Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei Technology, Coolpad and Haier, the sources noted. |
