Sony Mobile Communications Taiwan on May 21 unveiled the Xperia Tablet Z, an Android 4.1.2 waterproof tablet equipped with Qualcomm S4 Pro 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 10.1-inch 1920 by 1200 touch screen, 2GB RAM, 2-megapixel front camera and 8-megapixel rear camera, for launch soon in the Taiwan market, with recommended retail prices of NT$19,900 (US$663) for a 16GB 3G/LTE + Wi-Fi model, NT$18,480 for 32GB Wi-Fi, and NT$16,900 for a 16GB Wi-Fi version.
Sony Mobile Taiwan has already signed supply contracts with Taiwan-based telecom carriers Far EasTone Telecommunications and Taiwan Mobile.
Sony Mobile Taiwan president Jonathan Lin pointed out that the new device may suffer from shortages in Taiwan initially due to high demand worldwide, but inventory should be fully filled by June, helping the tablet to have a chance of achieving an over 10% share in the NT$15,000-and-above tablet segment in Taiwan.
As for some market watchers' forecasts that Sony will launch 7- to 8-inch tablets in the future, Sony Mobile Taiwan declined to comment.
