Sharp will launch new Ultra HD TVs under its Aquos UD1 series in Japan starting in June 2013.
Sharp announced it will release 60- and 70-inch models, with the 60-inch priced at JPY650,000 (US$6,337) and the 70-inch JPY850,000. Both TVs reportedly come equipped with Sharp's Ultra HD Moth-eye panel, the company's Aquos Ultra HD master engine pro HD upconversion engine, 2.1 channel THX surround and 3D capability.
The 70-inch unit is expected to hit stores in June in the Japan market followed by the 60-inch unit in August.
Market observers believe Sharp is focusing more on the high-end TV segment and is trying to increase its profit margins rather than trying to sell lower-cost units for the same price as Full HD TV units, similar to what China-based TV vendors are doing in the China market.
Meanwhile, industry sources noted that LG Display is expected to start mass producing 55- and 65-inch Ultra HD TV panels in July 2013, with LG Electronics expected to release Ultra HD TVs in the third quarter. |
