Samsung had plans to officially announce a smaller version of its flagship smartphone at an upcoming press event expected to take place in London on June 20. However, it seems that the company decided to speed up the announcement of a Galaxy S4 handset and unveil the phone today.
Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini packs a 4.3-inch display, a Snapdragon 400 chipset with two cores clocked at 1.7 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM and 8 GB of built-in storage, expandable via the microSD card slot. The graphics card within the unit will be an Adreno 305.
The S4 Mini will also have an 8 megapixel camera and a 2.1-megapixel front camera. Measuring 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.94 mm, the phone weighs 107 g with a 1,900 mAh battery which can be replaced. It runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz customizations on top.
Moving to the connectivity, there are three options. The top of the line model comes with LTE and NFC connectivity, then there is a 3G HSPA+ model and finally a dual-SIM 3G model. All models come with dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS + GLONASS.
Pricing and availability for the new Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini will be revealed at a later date, but the handset will be available in two colors - White Frost and Black Mist.
