In the second quarter of 2013, demand in the global PC and smartphone market is expected to increase but most firms have no plans to expand capacity. Hence revenues at Samsung and SK Hynix are expected to show sequential growth.
the total output value of the memory industry in South Korea reached KRW7.9 trillion (US$7.03 billion), representing an on-year growth of 8.5%. In addition, the percentage of NAND flash among total output in the first quarter increased to 38.2% from 37.6% in the fourth quarter of 2012 and 34.7% in the first quarter of 2012.
In the first quarter, SK Hynix saw revenues increase 16.3% on year, surpassing the 4.7% on-year revenue growth of Samsung Electronics.
Compared to Samsung, the PC DRAM sales percentage among total revenues at SK Hynix was greater and prices of PC DRAM are rising because firms have been conservative regarding capacity expansion and some have shifted production to mobile DRAM. This is the reason SK Hynix outperformed Samsung in revenues and profits in the first quarter. |
