Acer and Asustek Computer will continue to post losses in their smartphone businesses in 2013 as the two vendors have failed to ramp up their shipment volumes in cooperation with telecom carriers worldwide, according to industry sources.
Including the recently released 6-inch FonePad Note FHD 6 for the large-size smartphone segment, Asustek is expected to ship one million smartphones in 2013, estimated the sources.
Asustek plans to launch a new smartphone in the third quarter of 2013 and looks to break even for its smartphone unit in the second half of the year, revealed the sources.
Focusing on pushing sales of its smartphones to emerging markets, Acer aims to ship 1.5 million smartphones in 2013 and to break even in its smartphone business in 2014, the company said previously.
Acer is also expected to adopt a low-price strategy to promote its recently released 5.7-inch Liquid S1, due to its low brand image in the smartphone segment and fierce competition in the large-size smartphone sector, commented the sources.
