Nokia may launch the new Lumia 1020 smartphone in New York, US, in July 2013. The product has a 41-megapixel camera. Nokia also plans to introduce entry-level and mid-range Lumia smartphones. Taiwan-based OEM firm Compal Communications has received orders for one model and will begin shipments in the third quarter. This is the first time that Compal Communications has cooperated with Nokia on smartphone products that adopt Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform.
Although the market share of Windows Phone 8 products has yet to increase, Nokia continues to expand its product line. After the launch of the Lumia 925, Nokia plans to announce a new flagship model, which is likely to be named Lumia 1020, on July 11, in New York.
On the other hand, Nokia also plans to expand its entry-level and mid-range smartphone product lines. Compal Communications cooperated with Nokia on the Lumia 800, Lumia 610, and Lumia 510 that adopted Windows Phone 7.5 and 7.8.
In fact, since the Lumia 510, Nokia has yet to issue OEM orders to Compal Communications since the fourth quarter of 2012. This caused Compal Communications to see total shipments of only 2.6-2.7 million units in the first half of 2013. With new orders from Nokia, Compal Communications might ship more than three million units of a single model in the second half of 2013.
According to Ray Chen, chairman of Compal Communications, the Windows Phone platform has yet to show strong growth but market share is increasing. Chen predicts Windows Phone market share to increase to above 5% at the end of 2013.
Microsoft continues to expand the ecosystem. The firm recently announced cooperation with telecom carrier Telefonica O2 to provide Windows Phone 8 smartphone users with special deals on services such as Office 365, SharePoint, SkyDrive, and Xbox in the UK, Germany, Spain, Brazil and Chile.
Sprint, a US-based telecom carrier, also added Windows Phone 8 smartphones to its product line. The telecom carrier plans to introduce Windows Phone 8 smartphones by HTC and Samsung in the summer, bundled with unlimited 4G LTE packages.
Sprint cooperated with Samsung on the Ativ S Neo, a Windows Phone 8 smartphone with Qualcomm 1.4GHz dual-core processor and 4.8-inch AMOLED screen. The product also has an 8-megapixel camera. Sprint will also introduce the HTC 8XT which adopts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.4GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch screen.
