Packaging and testing firm Powertech Technology (PTI) has enjoyed growth in its shipments for mobile DRAM chips to Elpida Memory since the second half of 2012, according to market watchers. Orders for mobile DRAM from Elpida already accounted for as high as 50% of PTI's overall revenues generated from DRAM products in the second quarter of 2013, said the watchers.
Though Elpida will soon become a wholly owned subsidiary through acquisition by Micron Technology, PTI is expected to be a key partner for the merged Micron-Elpida entity, the watchers believe. With its creditable record in the supply of backend services to Elpida and manufacturing capability for advanced mobile DRAM chips, PTI will be able to maintain the orders placed by Elpida's Hiroshima plant after Micron's Elpida buyout takes place, the watchers pointed out.
PTI's multi-chip packaging technologies including MCP and PoP are far outperforming those of its rivals already, the sources said.
After acquiring Elpida, Micron reportedly will have Elpida's Hiroshima, Japan plant dedicated to producing mobile DRAM chips.
In addition, PTI's ongoing efforts to improve its product mix will buoy the company's sales and profit performance in the second half of 2013, the sources indicated. PTI has over the past year developed its offerings for non-DRAM products.
PTI's sales ratio between DRAM products, NAND flash and logic chips came to 42:34:24 in the first quarter of 2013, compared to 64:34:2 during the same period a year ago.
