MediaTek aims to push sales of its next-generation ARM big.LITTLE-based tablet processor, the MT8135, to Google, Amazon and Sony in addition to branded notebook and tablet vendors, according to industry sources. Mass production of the MT8135 chips is slated for the third quarter of 2013.
MediaTek's first-generation quad-core tablet CPU, the MT8125, launched in May, has been adopted by some first-tier PC vendors including Acer, Asustek Computer and Lenovo.
Given that tablet shipments by Google, Amazon and other non-PC brands total over five million units a year, winning orders from these brands will help MediaTek ramp up its share in the global tablet solution market, the sources noted.
At least five first-tier PC brands are expected to roll out a total of over 10 new tablets powered by MediaTek's new quad-core solutions in the second half of 2013, the sources revealed.
MediaTek said earlier that it aims to ship 15 million units of tablet solutions in 2013. But the chances are high for MediaTek to raise the target to 20 million units, the sources commented. |
