More and more white-box tablet makers in China have begun to develop new models using MediaTek's chipset solutions, including its quad-core MT8125 and MT8135, according to industry sources.
The adoption of MediaTek's tablet solutions by first-tier brands, including Acer, Asustek Computer and Lenovo, has helped ramp up the popularity of MediaTek's chipsets, forcing white-box makers to revamp their strategies for product differentiation, said the sources.
White-box tablet vendors have been counting on the supply of dual- and quad-core solutions from China-based chipset providers, including Allwinner Technology and Rockchip Electronics, to roll out tablets for the home and other emerging markets, revealed the sources.
However, the launches of US$99-199 MediaTek-based tablets by Acer, Asustek and Lenovo have cut into the entry-level to mid-range segment dominated by white-box makers previously.
White-box tablet makers have nothing to do but adopt chipset solutions from MediaTek in order to maintain their market shares, commented the sources, noting that combined demand for entry-level and mid-range tablets in China and other emerging markets have reached over 10 million units a month.
MediaTek has recently raised its tablet solution shipment target for 2013 to 15-20 million units from 10-15 million set previously. |
