In the China market, TD-SCDMA smartphones have surpassed WCDMA and CDMA 2000 EV-DO (evolution-data optimized) models in terms of sales volumes, mainly due to subsidized sales by China Mobile, the only TD-SCDMA mobile telecom carrier in China, according to Taiwan-based handset supply chain makers.
Based on statistics from China-based Sino Market Research, 11.71 million TD-SCDMA smartphones were sold in the China market in June 2013, compared with sales of 9.51 million WCDMA units and 5.73 million CDMA 2000 EV-DO units.
As shown by China Mobile's statistics, there were 598 TD-SCDMA smartphone models launched in the first half of 2013, 2.1 times the number for WCDMA models and 5.3 times the number of CDMA 2000 EV-DO models. During the period, 66.0 million TD-SCDMA smartphones were sold, an increase of 37.6% on year, the sources noted. Currently, TD-SCDMA models account for 40% of all 3G smartphones sold in the China market, a rise of 13 percentage points from 2012.
Since China Mobile has mostly relied on China-based vendors for supply of TD-SCDMA smartphones, especially inexpensive models with high performance-cost ratios, first-tier vendors including Huawei Device, ZTE, Coolpad and Lenovo are expected to benefit from booming sales of such smartphones, the sources pointed out. International vendors, including Apple, Nokia, Sony Mobile Communications, HTC, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, have lagged behind in tapping the TD-SCDMA market segment, and if they want to compete with China-based vendors, they have to cooperate with China Mobile, the sources indicated.
