Worldwide sales of semiconductors increased 1.3% on month to US$25.87 billion in August 2013, marking the sixth-straight month of sequential growth, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).
Chip sales for August 2013 were 6.4% higher than the US$24.32 billion reported a year ago, marking the industry's largest on-year growth since March 2011, said SIA.
"Global semiconductor sales have now increased for six consecutive months, and the industry is well ahead of last year's pace, thanks largely to sustained growth in the Americas," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO of SIA, in a statement.
August sales increased on an annual basis in the Americas (23.3%), Asia Pacific (7.6%) and Europe (5.0%), but dropped 16.4% in Japan, SIA disclosed.
August sales compared to the previous month grew in Japan (3.7%), the Americas (2.5%), Europe (2.0%) and almost flat in Asia Pacific (0.3%), SIA said.
"Strong demand for memory products has driven sales in recent months, but sales were also up in August among non-memory products, demonstrating the breadth of the semiconductor market's strength," Toohey continued. |
