Thought clamshells (flip-phones) are a niche, and obsolete form-factor, and unfit for smartphones? Think again. Samsung is planning a high-performance flip-smartphone that runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 SoC, and a pair of 4-inch class displays.
Labeled "W2014," the flip isn't too different from the Galaxy Folder in design, but features some extremely snappy hardware. The phone will be built with a combination of high-grade plastic, brushed metal, and possibly leather. Barring its screens that are sized in a way that's constrained by the design, the hardware could easily rival 5-inch class premium smartphones.
To begin with the W2014 features a pair of 3.7-inch Super AMOLED touchscreens on either sides of the top half of the phone. Both feature WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution. The main camera is located on the rear side of the bottom half, and features a 13-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. The inner side of the bottom half houses a physical keypad, including a D-pad. Both screens feature 5-point multi-touch.
Under the hood, the W2014 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.30 GHz, 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM, a possible LTE-ready soft-modem, with support for 802.11 ac WLAN, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE, internal expandable storage, and Android 4.3 "Jelly Bean" at the helm. Measuring 116.85 x 59.4 x 15.79 mm (folded) and 8 mm-thick unfolded, it could weigh in under 200 g. It could hit the stores at the equivalent of $700.
