Goodix and MStar Semiconductor, two associate companies of MediaTek, jointly took a 50% share of the smartphone-use touch controller IC market in China in the first half of 2013, with the ratio likely to climb to 60% in the second half, according to industry sources.
MStar, which will merge with MediaTek soon, has been focusing on touch controller ICs for entry-level smartphones and has maintained a 20-30% share in the segment since 2011.
Goodix has been able to push up its shipments by paring with MediaTek's shipments of single-, dual- and quad-core CPUs, and has managed to ramp up its market share from single-digits to over 20% in the second half of 2012.
Goodix's current monthly shipments of touch controller ICs are on par with the top-rank vendor, FocalTech Systems, an Intel-invested IC design house, the sources noted. |
