China-based BYD has obtained ODM/OEM orders for tablets from Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell and Toshiba due to its competitive prices, according to Taiwan-based tablet supply chain makers.
HP and Dell have launched BYD-produced tablets, while Toshiba will launch models at the end of 2013 or early 2014, the sources said.
China-based white-box vendors' development of low-price tablets has created opportunities for local component and system makers, the sources indicated. The design and manufacture of tablets is simpler than for notebooks, posing relatively low technological barriers for China-based makers, the sources noted.
China-based makers are able to offer lower prices to compete for tablet orders than Taiwan-based competitors, the sources indicated. However, Taiwan-based notebook ODMs, mainly Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, Wistron, Inventec and Pegatron, still have significant advantages in comparison with China-based makers, the sources noted. |
